ABOUT UAW Local 14 LEAD Page

Welcome to the LEAD page for UAW Local 14,

This page was made to simplify the passing of communication, both forward and back.  It is the intent that we improve our communication through the use of technology - this is but one way to do so.  The goal for this page is to do away with any of the idle shop gossip, and make for more real honest and open communication.  This site is a vehicle to provide that format.  The other is to be used to pass information along to all the the mentors then to their mentees for communication to the plant floor and provide effective feedback from that communication.  The hope is to create an even stronger unit, as well as a stronger community, because the pundits have done their job and now its our turn.  Do good in all you do for us here and now for all of our brothers and sisters - now and in the future.

In Solidarity,

Brian Van Pelt

Walter Philip Reuther was an American labor union leader, who made the United Automobile Workers a major force not only in the auto industry but also in the Democratic Party and the Congress of Industrial Organizations in the mid 20th century. He was a socialist in the early 1930s and worked closely with the Communist Party in the auto industry in the middle and late 1930s. He was a leader in removing communists from the offices in UAW and CIO in the 1940s. By 1949 he had become a leading liberal and supporter of the New Deal coalition, working to strengthen the labor union movement, raise wages, and give union leaders a greater voice in state and national Democratic party politics.

Core Philosophy

To achieve these wholesome objectives:

  • Management must accept union organization and collective bargaining as an essential and constructive force in our democratic society;

  • The workers must be provided a meaningful voice in maintaining a safe and healthful workplace with decent working conditions, and must enjoy secured rights, together with a satisfactory standard of living and maximum job security;

  • The workers must have a voice in their own destiny and the right to participate in making decisions that affect their lives before such decisions are made;

  • The UAW must play an active role at all levels of government to protect the lives and rights of its members and their families. We must work constantly on the political and legislative problems facing the whole society;

  • Union members must take seriously their responsibilities as citizens and workers, through their union and individually, to realize the goals of participatory democracy and responsible and accountable government.
